This thesis studies the application of the reconstruction strategies of English translation of agricultural texts based on the perspective of functional equivalence,as exemplified in the translation of the environmental assessment report by the US Department of Agriculture from the proposed management policy of genetically modified crops. The original text covers the present flow of transgenic traits to wild relatives in US,the impact of transgenic crops on the environment, and the impact of transgenic crops on corresponding agricultural technology measures. After the the initial translation, proofreading and translation summary, the author completes this translation practice report based on the problems in translation process and the strategies for tackling the difficulties, expecting to provide useful ideas and methods for the translation of the text in field of agriculture.Being the scientific and informative text, the original report is characterized by the abundance in biological and agricultural terms, the frequent adoption of complicated sentences, and the explicate as well as implicate logic expression. Therefore, the hard part of this project lays on the correct comprehension of the original meaning, the recovery of the described process and the re-expression of the textual information in natural and professional way, which is the focus of this thesis. The author adopts the Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and employs various reconstruction strategies to solve the problems, with the expectation for accurately delivering the original message in way of conforming to Chinese language custom,so that the target readers will receive the complete and accurate information as well as the same Reader Effect as the readers of the source language. In the translation analysis section, this thesis focuses on four concrete reconstruction strategies employed in translation process: inversion, reconstructing sentence patterns, vocabulary conversion, and tediousness elimination and amplification. The illustration of exemplary transitionspresents the actual effects of these strategies, summarizes the common rules, and retrospect the deficiencies in the initial version. It exposed the problems such as the “translation tone” resulted from the word-to-word correspondence and the over-aggregated information load in a single sentence. It turns out that the reconstruction strategy is feasibly useful in making the proper translations. The author has learned from this translation process that the translator should primarily understand the background of the field, improve the logical analysis ability, develop the translation techniques, and take reader's perspective to review the translated version,in order to meet the translation criteria. It is hoped that this thesis may deliver implications for English-Chinese translation of agricultural texts.
