This translation practice selects two chapters from the book Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies which was edited by Mona Baker. The book introduces various concepts of translation and the history of translation of major cultural and linguistic groups in the world. The two chapters used in the translation practice cover the following two topics: free translation and the history of translation.Based on the translation practice, the report deals with main problems in the E-C translation of long difficult sentences in social scientific texts, and the translation strategies and translation methods at the lexical and syntactic levels. The research results may be conducive to the E-C translation of long difficult sentences of the same genre. This report comprises four chapters. The first chapter is the description of the task background, research significance and literature review. The second chapter deals with the task process, including preparation before translation, translation process and proofreading after translation. The third chapter is the case study.Firstly, the linguistic features of English social scientific texts are analyzed, then the translation methods of nouns and pronouns at the lexical level are talked about. Then the report focuses on the translation methods of long and difficult sentences at the syntactic level, such as syntactic linearity, division, embedding and voice shifting,etc..The last chapter summarizes the experience and deficiencies of the translation practice.
