Variations on a Cantonese Folk Tune,hailed as one of the representative Cantonese piano works,is a piece of piano music composed by China's well-known composer—Chen Peixun during 1952-1975.Based on Cantonese music,Chen draws on composition techniques from the Europe to create Chinese folk music.Taking its composing background and musical composition into consideration,the study focuses on expounding the composing style of Chen's Variations on a Cantonese Folk Tune from the perspective of Variation with shifting two themes in it,flexible use of the five notes of traditional Chinese music,polyphony,acoustic technique and adoption of both western and Chinese melody;and the thesis attempts to elaborate its performing style and principles.The study mainly analyzes the elements such as balanced musical parts,strength,arpeggio rhythm and performing style.Concerning the interpretation on the relationship among its composing background,musical structure,and the piece of piano music,the thesis can be used as reference and assistance for the author herself and other readers.
