A Report On The Translation Of The Stars In Our Eyes (Introduction,Chapter One And Chapter Two)

The biographical text The Stars in Our Eyes written by Julie Klam,the New York Times-bestselling author,narrates the stories of many stars who were once quite popular in Hollywood.By narrating the celebrities' daily life and recording a variety of dialogues between Julie and the celebrities,the source text reveals the celebrities' interpretation of fame,explaining what the nature of celebrity is and why people are so attached to stars' gossip and being star-chasers.The source text provides a rational reference to readers to deal with the increasingly serious situation of chasing stars.The translation report is based on the practice.Firstly,the report introduces the translation task and describes the translation process.Difficulties came across in the translation process are mainly at two levels: at the lexical level,there are lots of proper nouns concerning names of stars,places,movies,etc,which poses a challenge to the translation;at the syntactic level,there are long sentences with complicated components and obscure information,and sentences of which the order need to be reorganized in Chinese version,which causes difficulties during the translation.Secondly,the core of the report analyzes respectively the translation strategies at two levels in detail.Lexically,transliteration,free translation,literal translation and annotation are used to deal with proper nouns,meanwhile,conversion of part of speech and use of Chinese four-character idioms are employed as well.Syntactically,division is used to deal with sentences with complicated components;addition is used for translating sentences with obscure information and recasting is used to deal with sentences of which the order need to be reorganized in Chinese version.Last but not least,inspiration and the unsolved problems have been listed as references for possible readers and researchers.
