Diplomatic Interpreting Strategies Based On The Event-Domain Cognitive Model

The Event-Domain Cognitive Model(ECM)is an analytical method in cognitive linguistics put forward by Wang Yin in 2005 to deal with the problems that exist in the previous theoretical models.ECM is also a kind of cognitive model with strong explanatory power,which accords with human normal cognitive rules,not only accounts for the formation of conceptual structures and syntactic constructions,but also analyzes many phenomena in semantic and communicative aspects.Recently,the Event-Domain Cognitive Model has attracted increasing attention and has been applied to interpreting studies by numerous scholars.However,there lacks case studies on interpreting strategies based on ECM.On the basis of ECM,this thesis chooses the language material—Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's press conference in 2017,adopting empirical study method to conduct an analysis.The thesis puts forward interpreting strategies from the perspective of semantic change,sentence structure and text coherence,and conducts a case study by combining ECM with the words,sentences and texts chosen from the language material.It will be proved that ECM can be used to analyze interpreting strategies.The strategies for semantic interpreting include semantic modelization,semantic expansion and semantic specialization,which are helpful for interpreters to enlarge vocabulary storage and get hold of the usages of words.The strategies for sentence interpreting consist of interpreting strategies on the syntactic level and default information and metonymic techniques,which can help interpreters obtain the main structures of sentences and interpret sentences smoothly.The strategies for text coherence include the application of dominance gist principle and the application of text coherence conditions,which can help interpreters to know the speaking logic of speakers and realize text coherence.This thesis analyzes the language material from the perspective of ECM,overcoming the inadequacies of previous studies that lack case studies,providing theoretical basis and method for the students majoring in English interpreting,and offering effective and feasible interpreting strategies to professional interpreters.In addition,the findings of the thesis can also provide theoretical basis for students majoring in English interpreting to conduct dynamic experiments on interpreting strategies.
