A Translation Report On The Earth Is Weeping-The Epic Story Of The Indian Wars For The American West(Chapters 1-2)

This report is an English-Chinese translation report based on the first and the second chapter from the military history text titled The Earth is Weeping-The Epic Story of the Indian Wars for the American West written by Peter Cozzens.The first chapter is a background introduction to the Indian Wars for the American West from the settlement of the Jamestown colony in Virginia to 1866—the first year after the end of the American Civil War.The second chapter introduces the Native American chief named Red Cloud and the war he led.In order to convey the original information more objectively and accurately,the translator consults a lot of resources about Native American history and culture before translation and repeatedly reads the original text and the books introducing translation methods.This translation report introduces the background and the significance of the translation and gives an introduction to the writer and the book(chapter1-2)and lists various difficulties mainly including the translation of proper nouns and the translation of complex sentences encountered by the translator in the translation process.This translation report focuses on the analysis of major translation methods.At lexical level,the translator uses literal translation and annotation to translate proper nouns and conversion and unpacking to translate common words and phrases.At syntactic level,the translator mainly uses four translation methods including linear translation,division,inversion and combination.Finally,the translator makes a conclusion about experience from this translation and the way the translator should go.The translator is expected to provide some reference for the translation of military history text and the research on the Indian Wars for the American West.
