On Interpretation Strategies Of Press Conference From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

The press conference during NPC and CPPCC sessions,as an activity to elaborategovernment's significant policies and standpoints,represents national interests and attitudes,conveys information with great politics,and draws great attention home and abroad with its comprehensiveness,accuracy and authority.The success of press conference highly depends on interpreters' work.Therefore,the study on interpretation strategies is conducive to the accuracy of conveying information and better understanding of speaker's speech.Meanwhile,it also can be used as reference for related interpreting activities later.In relevance theory,discourse communication is an ostensive-inferential process.And interpretation is a dual ostensive-inferential process involving speakers,interpreters and target language audience.Interpreters need to find the optimal relevance between discourse and contextual assumptions based on speakers' ostensive information in order to infer the speakers' communicative intention.Considering the target language audience's cognitive ability,background and interpreters' cognitive context,interpreters need to organize the interpretation and then convey speakers' communicative intention to the target language audience.Thus,with the lowest processing effort,the audience will gain enough contextual effects and clearly understand what speakers convey.The author found that the five widely-used interpretation strategies at press conference,namely explanatory interpretation,corresponding interpretation,restructuring,omission and literal interpretation,are closely related with relevance theory.Based on Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory,taking the interpretation of the press conference during NPC and CPPCC sessions from 2015-2017 by Zhang Lu as corpus,the author classified and analyzed the interpretation examples according to the five interpretation strategies by means of data collection and case analysis.The close relationship between the five interpretation strategies and relevance theory is further confirmed by the interpretation examples.In the analysis,the author also pointed out the guidance of relevance theory in the interpretation of the press conference.Under the guidance of relevance theory,the interpreter found the optimal relevance between the speaker's discourse and her contextual assumption.Considering the cognitive background of the target language audience and her own,she consciously chose the most appropriate interpretation strategies to interpret that made the communication successful.The author found the interpreter gives priority to certain interpretation strategies on different situations.
