On Interpretation Of Press Conference Of NPC And CPPCC Sessions From Nominalization Perspective

Interpretation on the press conference of NPC and CPPCC sessions is a hot topic forall students that major in translation and interpreting. Although the number of studies onthis occasion is impressive, the topics or focuses are quite limited. Studies would like to gofrom the perspective of interpretation practice, such as listening issues, delivery barriers,emergency-response capabilities, etc. or from the perspective of interpretation theory, suchas interpretive theory or Skopos theory.Therefore, this thesis will study the interpretation on press conference from alinguistic perspective—Grammatical Metaphor theory. The Grammatical Metaphor theoryupholds Nominalization as one of the most powerful approaches to create ideationalmetaphors. The formalness and objectivity that nominalization enhances can help improveinterpretation quality on government press conference. The purpose of this thesis is toprovide a new angle to make an analysis of consecutive interpretation on government pressconference.This thesis selects four pieces of interpretation on government press conference overfour years. Via quantitative method and qualitative method, a detailed analysis isdeveloped in terms of the realizations of nominalization, including classifications andfunctions of each nominalization type. The analysis shows there are two types ofnominalization that are of great popularity, namely Process-Entity transference andQuality-Entity transference. Then the thesis dwells on the functions of nominalization ingovernment press conference interpretation, including compressing information, enhancinglogics, raising objectivity and strengthening refinement. Considering all the benefits ofnominalization in interpretation, the author provides interpretation strategies based on fiveChinese sentence structures, which will be of considerable benefits to interpreters in futurepractice.
