A Report On Guide Interpreting

With the rapid development of China,the cultural exchange between China and other countries has also greatly expanded and deepened.Confucius Institute,as a cultural exchange agency overseas,plays a more and more important role in popularizing Chinese culture and Chinese language around the whole world.The Confucius Institute at University of Canterbury?CIUC?was jointly established by Hanban?Beijing?,University of Canterbury and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.It is the second Confucius Institute established in New Zealand and the first in South Island of the country.At the establishment of the CIUC in 2010,an agreement was made that a two-week Chinese Culture Immersion Camp will be co-organized by University of Canterbury and Huazhong University of Science and Technology annually.The Chinese Culture Immersion Camp provides a good opportunity for New Zealand high school students to learn about Chinese culture in China.A two-week HUST-CIUC Chinese Culture Immersion Camp was held during 16^th of April to 2^nd of May in 2016.The author was honored to serve as the interpreter for the 48 students participating the camp in Wuhan and Beijing.The author mainly interpreted for the students group in daily life and in scenic spots with much cultural information.The report is based on the Chinese to English tour guide interpreting in Prince Gong's Palace in Beijing.During the visit in Prince Gong's Palace,a Chinese attraction guide showed the students group around the palace and the author interpreted the presentation of the Chinese attraction guide for the students group.The presentation of the Chinese attraction guide features in abundant cultural words,four-character phrases,idioms and folklores.And the presentation involves much Chinese cultural knowledge including history knowledge,Chinese architecture knowledge,Chinese garden culture,the philosophy of Fengshui and etc.Hence it is worth doing an academic research about it.Therefore,the author recorded the on-site interpretation and transcribed the scripts.Then the scripts from Chinese into English are analyzed based on the theory of domestication and foreignization.The report consists of four parts.The first part gives a description of the background and features of the interpreting task.The second part presents the process of the interpreting task including the pre-interpretation preparation,interpreting process and post-interpretation quality control.The third part describes the theory of domestication and foreignization and the interpretation strategies to overcome the difficulties the author encountered during the interpreting process.The main challenges the author met during the interpreting process are cultural words,imperial titles and buildings'names as well as four-character phrases and idioms.Under the guidance of the theory of domestication and foreignization,the author analyzed how the interpreting strategies of addition,transliteration can be applied in practice,as well as how further explanation and interpreting the literal meaning can be used to overcome the difficulties she met during the interpreting process.And the fourth part lists the unsolved problems and the suggestions for further researches.
