Nowadays, tourism becomes the largest cultural service industry in the world. Underthe influence of China’s economic globalization, tourism is stepping into the era ofglobalization. According to the statistics of World Tourism Organization, China willbecome No.1nation of tourist destination and No.4tourist exporting nation by the year2020. In order to bring Chinese culture to foreign tourists in a better way, high qualitytour guide interpretation has a vital role to play. However, there are still a lot of problemsin tour guide interpretation, especially the problem of choice of interpretation strategies.Although some researches have already been done in the field of tourism translation,most of them are from the perspective of intercultural communication or functionalisttheories of translation. However, few people have done enough research on the strategiesused in tour guide interpretation from the perspective of domestication and foreignization.So this thesis tends to do some research in this field.The thesis is composed of an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. And itsmain content is as follows:The first part is an introduction, which briefly outlines the theme, major relatedresearch, and the writing purpose and methodology of this thesis.The second part is the main body of the thesis, which includes three chapters:Chapter Ⅰ is the literature review, which makes an introduction to tour guideinterpretation, including its definition and characteristics. It also comes up with thetheoretical foundation of domestication and foreignization, including their propositionsand major western and Chinese theories concerning them. Both of the above backgroundinformation provides a theoretical guidance to the research of tour guide interpretationstrategies.Chapter Ⅱ mainly discusses the application of domestication in tour guideinterpretation. Domestication can be composed of addition, deletion, analogy, paraphrase,adaptation and other domesticating strategies. This chapter mainly discusses them fromthe perspective of function, effect and importance by analyzing specific examples.Chapter Ⅲ makes an exploration of foreignization in tour guide interpretation.Foreignization includes literal translation, transliteration, literal translation withtransliteration and other foreignizing strategies. It also proposes the factors involved in the choice of domestication and foreignization in tour guide interpretation.The third part is the conclusion, which makes a summary of the whole thesis, andpoints out the limitation of this thesis, as well as suggestions for further related research.The nature of tour guide interpretation is an act of intercultural communication. Thecultural differences between the East and the West have brought great challenges to tourguide interpreters. It is of theoretical and practical value to know how to effectivelyconvey Chinese culture to foreign tourists. This thesis aims to connect domestication andforeignization, two major strategies in translation theory, with tour guide interpretation,and analyze the dealing with cultural information in tour guide interpretation guided bythese two strategies. Qualified tour guide interpreters should fluently command theapplication of domestication and foreignization to bring Chinese culture to foreigntourists.
