The classic movies in the history of movies,such as It Happened One Night,Stagecoach and Easy Rider,are all road movies.And Little Miss Sunshine,Up,The Croods which have been popular in recent years,are also road movies.Unlike movie genres such as musical and western films,road movies are not just a genre that is popular in one era.They have the charm of surpassing the times.If we look back,there are always road stories in the history of civilizations.In western civilization,for example,from the source of Odysseus,Exodus to travel adventure novels and knight novels and literature,we can see the way the story with the help of different media throughout the history of civilization.The road movie is the new carrier of the story in the industrial civilization.So why? Why do we humans have such a preference for road stories?The author has always been interested in the film's narrative level.After realizing the uniqueness of the road movie,I have deepened my interest in exploring the narrative elements of road movie.However,in the author widely consult the road movie research papers and monographs,only to find that the study of road movie ontology is very scarce,especially lack of systematic study of road movie narrative levels.With these questions,I began to study the road film.First of all,the author assumes that there is a fully existing body,which is not limited by time and space.For this entity,there is no difference between this time and the time,here and the other;relative,human is restricted Presence,which is limited by time and space,is the basic state of human existence.We believe that this limited state of existence causes humans to have a basic desire to break through space-time constraints.This is the reason why humans desire to “get on the road”;it is also the reason why humans need stories,because the essential characteristics of stories are virtual space-time.Therefore,"on the road" and "entering the story space-time" are two alternative solutions to solve this basic problem.The road story is a combination of these two programs.This is to answer the first question from the basic state of human existence.From the perspective of human history,the entire human history is a process of constant migration.Migration has played an important role in the development of human civilization.After a long history,this migratory experience can be said to have entered the collective subconscious of mankind.In the study of the classic road story text,we find that the road story has a unique structure,which is called "beaded" structure.The so-called "beads" can be divided into lines and beads,and the "lines" that run through are the core characters,core characters and core events,while "beads" are the characters and events encountered on the road.This narrative structure has its unique advantages,and we summarize it as an integration of openness,closure,continuity and centrality.Because of this structure,the road film is very suitable for telling the changes in the relationship between character and character arc.Thus,the relationship between character arcs and characters has become the main narrative material for road movies.Through a large number of textual analysis,we found that in road movies,the characters' problems can be mainly divided into three kinds: inner trauma,lost human nature,and self-growth.The process on the road is the process of character growth.Once the “problem” solves,the journey,end;and the changes in the relationship between people in road movies can be divided into four phases: the establishment and friction of the relationship between the characters,the development of the relationship between the characters,the breakdown of the relationship between the characters,and the sublimation of the characters.In addition to this,we have also summed up the six most common core events in road movies: Go to a place,find,pursue and escape,visit,leave a place,and roam.In fact,the road film is a big concept,and many different movies are under this concept.Therefore,it is necessary to classify the road films.In order to solve this problem,we examine from a narrative perspective which of the road movie characters,characters and plots is at the core,and use this as a standard to classify road movies.The so-called narrative core examines which element is the true narrative purpose and which element “reaps” all narrative significance.Under this standard,road movies can be divided into three categories: road movies with characters as the narrative core,road movies with characters as the narrative core,and road movies with events as the core.Under the three major categories,there are more detailed classifications.The first major category is divided into "characters grow on the road" and "characters get performance on the road";the second major category changes in four stages according to the relationship of characters.Different “uses” can be subdivided into four categories;the third category is divided into two categories: “leaving a place” and “fighting on the road”.Based on the classification,we studied the narrative prototypes of each sub-category and achieved some results.Through this study,we have gained a new and in-depth understanding of road movies,and understand why people prefer road movies.On the basis of a lot of textual research,we also get a systematic understanding of road movie narrative material,classification and narrative prototype.
