A Report On The Translation Of Anything Is Possible (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Communication Translation Theory

This thesis is a report on the translation of the novel Anything is Possible(excerpt)written by Elizabeth Strout.It explores the inner worlds of many characters through describing their emotional conflicts and the spiritual joys of discovering themselves in search of their American Dream.Anything Is Possible consists of nine stories with each story about someone who lives in Amgash,middle-west of America,and knew Lucy when she was a child.For the most part,these characters are not happy people,but they have had to fight for just about everything and people who are engaged in the struggle to avoid bitterness and reconcile themselves to the consequences of bad choices or bad luck,but in the end,each of them believes that anything is possible.In this book,the protagonist,Lucy Barton,appears as an almost mythical figure to those who knew her as a girl.However,she is connected to all the people in the nine stories,including Tommy Guptill,the janitor in Lucy's school,Pete Barton,Lucy's brother,Vicky,Lucy Barton's sister,Patty Nicely and Linda Nicely,Lucy's playmates when they were young,Charlie Macauley and Marilyn Macauley,a couple that Tommy knows,Angelina Mumford,Patty's friend and Angelina's mother Mary Mumford and Lucy's cousin Abel and Abel's sister Dottie.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory,the author translates the first two chapters(approximately 15000 words)of the novel.Then,the author analyzes the difficulties she encounters from the level of lexis,syntax,and style.To demonstrate her thinking process,the author cites a host of translated examples and puts forward some practical translation strategies.
