Supply And Demand Of Interpreting Market And Professionalization Of Interpreting

This survey aims at outlining a general picture of Chinese/English interpreting market in Macao and understanding:(1)basic demands for interpreting;(2)channels for demand and supply of interpreting;(3)degree of professionalization of interpreting.The survey is conducted via questionnaires,telephone interviews and in-depth interviews.Questionnaires for interpreting clients and interpreters are designed correspondingly to collect information and data from the demand side and the supply side.Data received have been compared and analyzed.The results suggest that Chinese/English interpreting market in Macao is in its preliminary stage,because:(1)there is no official research data for the market;(2)the channels of demand and supply is not transparent;(3)there is no official standard or norm for interpreters;(4)the awareness of qualification certification of interpreting is low;(5)the degree of professionalization is not satisfying.Because of these problems,rights and benefit of both interpreters and clients are not protected.Three suggestions on how to ensure a more sustainable development of the interpreting market in Macao are then proposed.
