Nowadays, interpreting study has become a focus of many scholars within this area.Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the interpreting industry is of significantimportance to improve the interpreting education. Guangdong University of ForeignStudies (GDUFS hereafter) is one of the first universities and institutions to initiatethe establishment of MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting), aiming at trainingMTI graduates with good comprehensive quality, extraordinary language skill andinterpreting and translation skills so that they can become excellent employees for themarket. However, hardly anyone has studied whether GDUFS MTI curriculumdesigning can meet the market demand, and market survey on the industry’s needs israrely conducted. This survey is conducted to find out what the effectiveness ofGDUFS MTI interpreting curriculum and what the market expects of qualityinterpreting education, with the hope to provide suggestions to interpreting educators,especially in GDUFS, and to the MTI graduates of this major.Three questionnaires are designed and distributed both through paper and theInternet. To get more insightful comments, interviews are done as complements.Subjects are interpreting companies in Guangdong Province, teachers of the MTIprogram as well as students majored in MTI Interpreting, graduating in2013and2014. Responses are elicited from3aspects, i.e. MTI graduates’, teachers’ and theinterpreting company employers’perspectives.Based on the analysis of the results, the following suggestions are put forward:1) in terms of the GDUFS interpreting curriculum, more courses in regard to interpreting practice and language skills should be set up, and great importanceshould be placed on the cultivation of MTI graduates’ attitude, learning andcommunication skills;2) as for the MTI graduates themselves, they should bemore hard-working and self-dependent, so as to improve their comprehensivequality;3) concerning the teaching methods, apart from class practice, case study,market practice and real time tasks should be involved in.
