A Report On The Translation Of Patent Abstract From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

Patent abstract has special stylistic linguistic features,which are mainly used to transmit information and facilitate the communication and dissemination of technology.As the number of patents has increased significantly,the demand for English translation of patent abstracts has become more and more prominent,which also presents challenges for the translators.Due to lack of adequate theory and method guidance,the quality of translation is uneven,and translation practice using Newmark's Text Typology Theory is meaningful.Patent abstract is an informative text,as such,patent abstract translation need to follow the standard of communicative translation.Firstly,the author analyses the patent abstract translation in lexical level and studies how to realize communicative translation in translation strategy of addition;secondly,the author analyses the patent abstract translation in syntactic level and studies how to realize communicative translation in translation strategy of adjustment of word order and shift;thirdly,the author analyses the patent abstract translation in discourse level and studies how to realize communicative translation in translation strategy of literal translation and free translation,so as to make a significant difference in improving the quality and efficiency of translators in this field.Above all,the author proposes that,in lexical level,when an object is omitted in the source text,in translation,the lost messages must be added in order to realize the accuracy of communication of original text message in the target text;in syntactic level,object and subject can be rearranged to clearly convey source message and clarify the logic of various components if correction need to make by target readers,a noun is shifted to a verb,a verb is shifted to a noun,active voice is shifted to passive voice when these words in target text function differently;in discourse level,the author proposes translation strategy of using literal translation as priority and free translation with assistance.While,the author lacks relevant professional background knowledge,the author's experience is limited,there are still many other translation strategies and standards for patent abstract translation,and theauthor only selects patent abstract to analysis,while the patent invention name,the claim book,the manual and the attached drawings constitute the patent,as such,in the future,translation practice remains to be perfected by the author.
