This paper is a Chinese-English(C-E) translation report and the source texts are two typical technology patent documents from a law office. Patent is an exclusive right granted by a sovereign state to an inventor for a limited period of time. Generally speaking, a patent includes four parts: Title, Claims, Description, and Abstract. With the fast growing of information and technology and further development of economic globalization, technology patent translation is attracting more and more attention. In a technology patent, the rest parts all have their functions and language features except Title, and different principles and methods should be adopted separately. According to relevant data, the research in this field is not satisfactory. Many researches concern mainly about lexical, grammatical and stylistic characteristics on the English-Chinese translation of technology patent. Therefore, patent translation research, particularly C-E patent translation research is still badly needed. Based on the analysis of structures, functions, and language features of technology patent, guided by text typology theory of Peter Newmark, the report explores its C-E translation from the aspects of Claims, Description and Abstract combining with detailed case analysis, and the following conclusions are reached: in a technology patent, Claims belong to expressive texts while Description and Abstract are mainly informative texts. Thus, it is crucial for translators to follow author-centered principle in the translation of Claims to remain the content as well as the style of the original. It is better for translators to follow authenticity-centered principle in the translation of Description and Abstract to make sure the translation is accurate, clear and readable. Therefore, in light of text typology theory, different techniques could be applied based on language features and functions in terms of Claims, Description and Abstract in a technology patent to achieve effective translation.
