This is an empirical study to investigate the phenomenon of “deverbalization” in student interpreters' English-Chinese consecutive interpreting notes with an aim to address the following issues:1.What are the manifestations of “deverbalization” in student interpreters' E-C interpreting notes?2.What are the correlations between the phenomenon of “deverbalization” in student interpreters' notes and the quality of interpreting? An experiment with 10 student interpreters was conducted in the Simultaneous Interpreting Lab at Shenzhen University.Their renditions were recorded and transcribed. After that, their notes were compared and analyzed carefully. Then,a questionnaire sheet concerning their interpretation and self-evaluation of their own notes was handed out to and filled in by them.Meanwhile, the author developed an assessment form based on the interpretive theory of translation and Yang Chengshu's Interpreting Assessment Form, and evaluated the students' interpreting output. The author also studied the correlations between deverbalization in student interpreters' notes and the quality of their interpreting products. The study finds out that:1.The manifestations of deverbalization in student interpreters' E-C interpreting notes are as follows:(1)Mathematical symbols, punctuation marks, geometric figures and self-invented symbols are employed to indicate the original messages;(2)Taking notes of the logic of the original speech through organizing the layout of the notes;(3)Editing messages in the original speeches with the help of simplification and omission;(4)Taking notes of implied/background information, which is not provided in the original speeches.2.The more symbols are used in their notes, the better the quality of their interpreting is.However, the other manefestations of deverbalization are not so much related to the quality of CI output.Based on the findings above, the author suggests that when taking notes during E-C consecutive interpreting, student interpreters should use more symbols to represent sense, and that they should form their own symbol systems as soon as possible.
