Report On The Translation Of Battery Technology For Electric Vehicles:Public Science And Private Innovation(Excerpt)

The report is based on the translation practice of Chapter Three excerpted from book Battery Technology for Electric Vehicles: Public Science and Private Innovation.The book summarizes the development of battery technology for electric vehicles,introduces the investment and support on developing such technology from U.S.Department of Energy,and evaluates the economic benefits resulted from federal investment.Chapter Three presents the relations between sales of electric vehicles in America in recent years and relevant national tax-reduction policies and funded technological programs by the government,and introduces in details technological principles of battery technology for electric vehicles,especially about NiMH battery and Li-ion battery technologies.Under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory,the translator adopted flexible translation strategies and methods at lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic levels to solve difficulties in the translation practice.For lexical difficulties,referring parallel texts,liberal translation,conversion of parts of speech and other strategies were employed,and for syntactic problems,the translator adopted translation skills such as division,reversion,omission,amplification,restructuring and change of sentence voices.To reproduce the spirit and style of source text and arouse identical responses from target text readers,the translator fully considered writing purposes of source text and concluded her own methods to address the translation of EST in terms of its unique features including academic writing format,figures and tables,etc.,so as to achieve same form with the prerequisite of guaranteeing faithful convey of content.The report combines examples in this translation practice to explore corresponding strategies and methods in EST translation,aiming to provide reference for other translators who will conduct similar translation programs.
