Digitalization has triggered structural transformations in the media industry.In2013,the Chicago Sun-Times announced eliminating the entire photography department “as part of a multimedia staffing restructure”.The shocking news of laying off 28 full-time photography staff led to the heated debate about the state and role of photojournalists in the digital age.Pessimists warn that it marks the end of photojournalists, while optimists believe that it indicates the birth of the next-generation photojournalists. The survey report on The State of News Photography 2016 published by the World Press Photo Foundation demonstrates the changes taking place in the work and lives of photojournalists and the professional trends. The report is based on an online survey with 1,991 photographers from more than 100 countries.I chose this report as the source text of my translation practice because it is an authoritative,up-to-date,informative survey report and it also matches my personal interest in photography.Since a survey report is supposed to be goal-oriented and contain solid facts, translating such report should aim to convey information in a clear, accurate and comprehensive way.During the translation process,I have met two major problems:first, how to find information focus in the sources text and highlight it in target language;second, how to adapt the translation to the conventions of Chinese report writing with proper translation skills. To solve the first problem,I have learned about the skill of end focus used by English and Chinese writers to highlight information focus, based on which I can locate information focuses in the source text and re-emphasize them in the target language. To solve the second problem,I have read teaching materials of report writing and learned from accomplished survey reports authored by Chinese writers.Besides,I have made some reflection on my experience of trans-editing the report for a media trade journal. This translation practice offers a valuable chance for me to improve translation and trans-editing skills, and I wish my translation work will be helpful for the Chinese news photography community. The trans-edited version of the report has been published in the magazine of Lingnan Media Research in October 2017 as planned.
