The Grafting Of "A Trans-editing Tree"

The core purpose of military trans-editing is to provide users with information they need,or intelligence in other words.The process of military trans-editing is similar to trees grafting: first,a demand for specific intelligence is identified,serving as the purpose of translation and the root of a tree;second,centered on this purpose,the translator ?transplants? the required ?materials? from the source text(ST)into ?a tree of intelligence?.Meanwhile,intelligence is time-sensitive.In a limited time,the translator has to,on the one hand achieve the translation purpose,and on the other hand,transplant as many contents into the target text(TT)as possible.Therefore,translators have to set up a list of priorities in the transplanting process.The top priority is to meet the user‘s intelligence demand,or in other words,to give an answer to the question posted by the user,which will serve as the conclusion of the TT.Secondly,if time allows,the conclusion will be supported by necessary arguments.Thirdly,if time is still sufficient,the arguments will be further proven by ideas supporting them,and so on.In each step,corresponding contents of the ST will be transplanted into the TT.In this way,a hierarchical structure based on the order of transplanting is thus established.The selected contents of the ST will be classified into different levels of this structure.This order can be likened to the sequence of grafting the trunk,branches...and leaves into a tree one by one.The translator can stop grafting at any level once time runs out.And when a next level is yet to be grafted,all grafted levels have already made up of a tree,and the TT has got its intended functions.Consequently,there will be various versions of the TT: the TT with only one level,the TT with two levels,and so on.How many levels the TT will hold hinges upon the requirements of the user and the time the translator has been given.Due to its similarities with trees grafting,this method is called ?a trans-editing tree?.Proceeding from the function orientation of military trans-editing,the report concludes that military trans-editing is an activity which takes the achievement of the function of military intelligence as its purpose.According to this conclusion,the report applies functional theories of translation to military trans-editing.And based on the characteristics of military trans-editing,the report puts forward the method of ?a trans-editing tree?,which is then applied to the trans-editing of Beyond the San Hai: the Challenge of China's Blue-water Navy.The reporter expounded on the concrete steps of the trans-editing process,and explained such issues as textual cohesion concerned in the post-editing.The value of the method is hereby exhibited.
