The Effect Of Response Mode On The Space-Time Congruency Effect

The research of temporal spatial metaphor explains the psychological reality of time and space.However,there are some disagreements in the linkage between the two domains.Someone believes the relationship between time and space is symmetrical,which wouldn't be impacted by language habits,response modes,spatial information and so on.Others think the relationship is asymmetrical,which would be affected by response modes and moreover has cross-language differences.In this research,we discuss whether response modes can affect the relationship between time and space in Chinese.Experiment 1 discusses whether response modes can affect the relationship between time and space in the front and rear direction.The experimental results show that there are consistent effects of past/forward and future/backward under the key reaction condition,and the past/backward and future/forward effects under the verbal reaction condition.And,the difference of amount in the verbal reaction condition is more than the key reaction condition.Experiment 2 discusses whether response modes can affect the relationship between time and space in the up and down direction.The experimental results show that there is a consistent effect of future/up under the key reaction condition,and the past/up effect under the verbal reaction conditions And,the difference of amount in the key reaction condition and oral reaction condition is not significant.Experiment 3 discusses whether response modes can affect the relationship between time and space in the left and right direction.The experimental results show that there are consistent effects of past/left and future/right under the key reaction condition and the verbal reaction condition.And,the difference of amount in the key reaction condition and oral reaction condition is not significant.The results of the three experiments show that the spatial and temporal coherence effects in front-back and up-down directions are affected by the response modes and support the view of conceptual metaphors.The left and right spatial-temporal coherence effects are not influenced by the response modes because of weak association with language,also support the viewpoint of the conceptual metaphors.The human representation of time and space combines propositional symbols and perceptual symbols.Oral reaction activates propositional symbols,and key reaction activates perceptual symbols.
