A Liaison Interpreting Report On The Agenda Of Pakistani Ambassador’s Visit To WSIG Based On Interpersonal Function

With the further development of economic globalization,people with different backgrounds communicate with each other more frequently.However,linguistic and non-linguistic differences may hinder the smooth exchange of communication.This report is based on the author’s experience as an intern liaison interpreter in Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co.Ltd.(thereafter abbreviated as WSIG)to facilitate the communication between the Pakistani and the Chinese.The materials include the liaison interpreting over the agenda of the visit to WSIG by the Pakistani ambassador to China,the speech on Pakistani resolution Day and the negotiation of the hiring Chinese driver by the Pakistani,with the first as focus.This report is based on the author’s two-way liaison interpreting practice featured with the negotiation in an informal setting.Having described the interpreting task and process,the author discussed major difficulties in the process including roundabout expressions and colloquial expressions by the Chinese representative and imperative compact sentences by the Pakistani representative.Then,based upon the mood and modality system in interpersonal function by Halliday,the author adopted adaptation,omission and amplification to resolve these difficulties supported by specific examples.In the end,the author found out that even the interpreting practice and difficulties were special in this case,the discussion of this practice is useful for future interpreting of this kind.
