A Research On The Relationship Between Academic Stress,coping Strategies And Mental Health Of High School Students

Objective: We aim to investigate the general situation of academic stress,coping strategies and mental health status among high school students,and to explore the relationship between academic stress,coping strategies and mental health,which could provide scientific basis for improving the mental health of high school students.Methods: Using the stratified cluster random sampling method,2424 students from four high schools in Wuhan center city were selected as the research objects.Among all the students,there are 1264 boys and 1160 girls;there are 667 Junior 1 students,489 Junior 2 students,569 Senior 1 students and 699 Senior 2 students;there are 1301 students from the key high schools and 1123 students from the ordinary high schools.The students should complete the School Students' Academic Stressors questionnaire(SSA),Mental Health Inventory of Middle school students(MMHI-60)and Coping Style Scale.We used EpiData3.1 and SPSS 20.0 to record and analysis the data.Descriptive analysis,t-test,analysis of variance,correlation analysis,regression analysis and path analysis were used to analysis the data.Results:1.The detection rate of psychological problems among high school students in Wuhan center city was 63 %,with wild,moderate and severe problems being 49.5%,12.4%,1.10%.There is a slight psychological abnormality among high school students in Wuhan center city.2.The characteristics of high school students' academic stress:(1)The score of development stress with different grades showed difference(P<0.05),junior 2 students got the highest score.(2)With the improvement of family economic status,the total score and each dimension of SSA showed a downward trend.3.The characteristics of high school students' coping strategies:(1)The boys got higher scores than girls in the total score and each dimension of Coping Style Scale(P<0.05).(2)There were significant differences of the total score and the retreat,vent,fantasy and patience dimensions in different grades(P<0.05).(3)With the improvement of the family economic status,the score of problem solving is on the rise.4.The characteristics of high school students' mental health:(1)The score of high school students' mental health showed difference in grades(P<0.05).(2)With the improvement of family economic status,the total score of mental health and the scores of each dimension decreased.The scores of key high school students in mental health total score and obsessive,paranoid ideation,hostility,poor adaption and mental imbalance dimensions were lower than that of ordinary secondary school(P<0.05),the one-child students scored above the students with siblings in learning pressure dimension(P<0.05).5.The correlation analysis between the relationship of high school students' academic stress,coping strategies and mental health: academic stress was positively related with mental health,problem solving was negatively related with some dimensions of mental health,the rest dimensions of coping strategies were positively related with mental health(P<0.001).6.Regression analysis of high school students' academic stress,coping strategies and mental health: 40% variability of mental health can be explained by academic stress;23.3% variability of mental health can be explained by coping strategies;50.3% variability of mental health can be explained by academic stress and coping strategies.Seeking help and problem solving had significant negative predictions in mental health,while other dimentions had positive predictions.7.Examining the mediation role of coping strategies between the relationship of academic stress and mental health:(1)Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that high school students' coping strategies was partially mediated the relationship between academic stress and mental health.(2)Path analysis model revealed that the percentage of the coping strategies' mediation effect was 9.8%.Conclusion:The detection rate of psychological problems among high school students in Wuhan center city was 63% which indicated that the mental health status of the students is not optimistic.High school students' academic stress,coping strategies and mental health were related with each other,both academic stress and coping strategies can effect high school students' mental health.High school students' coping strategies was partially mediated the relationship between academic stress and mental health.Reducing the academic stress and taking the positive coping strategies could improve the level of high school students' mental health.
