Analysis Of Common Mistakes In English-Chinese Translation Of Contracts

As China has been accelerating its opening up to the outside world,Chinese and foreign companies have more opportunities to cooperate with each other,and with it comes the companies' increasing demand for English-Chinese translation of their cooperation contracts.However,the quality of some delivered translations are criticized by legal professionals in terms of accuracy and readability.The thesis discusses the common mistakes in English-Chinese translation of contracts and proposes corresponding countermeasures.Firstly,the thesis states the three common characteristics that English contracts have in terms of vocabulary,sentence structure and language style.Secondly,according to the characteristics mentioned above,the thesis sorts out the typical mistakes made by the author in the translation of an equity joint venture contract and a license agreement of a joint venture company,and points out translators' misunderstanding of vocabulary and sentence structure and ignorance of language style are the main factors that cause inaccurate and unreadable translation.Thirdly,by analyzing the mistakes,the thesis summarizes corresponding strategies,including gathering resources about English contract translation and rules of such translation practice,combining sentence structure analysis and logical reasoning,and ensuring the completeness of every term and the conciseness and solemnity of the translation,hoping to help contract translators improve their translation quality.
