The source text of this translation practice is from Educational Philosophy for 21 st Century Teachers, written by Thomas Stehlik,a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of South Australia. This book explores education in the 21 st century in post-modern western countries from a philosophical perspective, and in this book, classical philosophical thoughts are applied to guide today's educational practice, which is profound and academic.China is in the critical period of educational reform,so translating such kind of works is not only helpful for the translators to improve their translation skills, further their understanding of philosophy and education, but also valuable for teachers, the future teachers, and all adults who are educating children. The text belongs to informational text in terms of Newmark's(2001)classification of text types. The words are rigorous, normative, and solemn with numerous philosophical and educational terminologies;the language is formal with strict grammars and tight sentence structure;lots of famous quotes about philosophy and education make it profound. The translation of informative texts focuses on the "authenticity" of content, and the author's language comes the second,so the principle of "authenticity first" should be followed in translation.Based on the type, characteristics and target readers of the text, various methods and strategies are involved in the translation such as Amplification,Ellipsis,Sentence-breaking,Merging,Negation,Inversion and Recasting in order to better deliver the author's educational thoughts and inspire educators.Through this translation practice, the translator is enlightened from the following aspects.First of all,in order to maintain the authenticity of the information of the source text, translators mainly adopt the strategy of foreignization. However,it is necessary to use the strategy of domestication or foreignization flexibly since Skopos rule considers the target readers as one of the most important factors in deciding a translation purpose.Secondly,as a result of the multiple meanings of each English word, the translator must choose or define the terminology which seems alike by concerning the context to make the target text consistent with the source text to the utmost.Thirdly,in the texts with many cases, the translator should translate the cases from a broad perspective, that is coping with minor details properly on the basis of the theme, because the focus of the translation is on the views that the author wants to demonstrate.
