Fluency is a key standard for assessing the quality of interpreting.Even when the content is accurate and complete,if there are too many inappropriate verbal fillers or pauses, the quality of the interpreting will be highly reduced.Through research and study, the author found that the non-fluent interpreting can be summarized into four categories. They are non-lexical pauses, lexical pauses, repetition and correction. The thesis is based on the Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting of the mock conference of the press conference of the Fourth World Internet Conference. It discusses the causes of the non-fluencies and offers related solutions mainly form the perspective of regular training. The author finds out that the main causes of the non-fluencies are the misallocation of the efforts between listening and speaking, and the non-proficiency of note-taking.In the end, based on the case study and practical experiences, the author proposes that promoting language proficiency and forming a flexible note-taking system are key to reducing non-fluency.It is expected that the thesis can help interpreters avoid similar problems when coming across similar situations, and provide some advice for other interpreting learners.
