Science and technology is an important driving force for the development and progress of human society,as well as the symbol of modern society.A series of environmental problems have arisen with the increasing demand for the energy.Therefore,it is of great significance to understand the current status of global energy development and utilization,and it is also very important to deepen people’s attention to environmental issues.So the translation work related to this kind of texts should be paid more attention.Solid Waste from the Operation and Decommissioning of Power Plants was published by the Site DOE Information Bridge in 2016.The selected translation materials in the practical report is from Chapter Two-Coal.This text belongs to scientific and technological text,which is objective,rigorous and professional.It includes technical application of the coal-fired power plant during the operation,the related treatment of solid waste,the decommissioning of coal plants,and the reuse of coal plant sites.This translation practice report explains the applicability of translation shift theory in practice.The earliest concept of translation shift was put forward by the Western translation theorist Catford.Based on the systemic functional language,he summarized different types of translation shift.On the perspective of two different shifts,level shift and category shift,the author analyzes the characteristics and differences between the source language and target language,and summarizes translation strategies and methods.All of this reflects the guiding significance of translation shift theory to the translation of this kind of practical materials.From the practice,the author finds: 1)The analysis of the source language text is the premise of translation.Besides,the author should strengthen understanding of the guiding theory.2)The choice of translation theory is crucial.The appropriate translation theory can better guide the translation practical materials.This practice proves that Catford’s translation shift theory has a strong practical guiding function on the translation of scientific and technological text.Finally,through this translation practice,the author summarizes the experience and points out the shortcomings in the translation practical report,all of which could be beneficial for the author’s study and practice in the future.Meanwhile,the author hopes this report can provide a reference on this kind of translation.
