A Report On The Translation Of Library Of Chinese Handmade Paper·Anhui Volume

This is a report on the translation of Library of Chinese Handmade Paper:Anhui Volume.Library of Chinese Handmade Paper is a program that will produce a series of books,compiled by Professor Tang Shukun of University of Science and Technology of China,with Yunnan Volume,Guangxi Volume and Anhui Volume completed.This program records the history,papermaking techniques,relevant culture and folk customs of handmade paper in China.It is funded by the National Publishing Fund and the National “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”,and has great significance in both academic research and cultural inheritance.The legends,folk custom and industry taboos related to hand-made paper in Anhui and the protection,inheritance and study of hand-made paper in Anhui from Chapter One,Anhui Volume are selected as the texts to be translated.Under the guidance of Vermeer's Skopos theory,this report analyzes the difficult points in translation process,including the translation of the culture-loaded words,common sayings,classical Chinese and long sentences related to Xuan paper-making,and proposes some detailed solutions.This report further illustrates different translation skills employed to solve the difficult points,such as literal translation,amplification,simplification,division and inversion.Both of the theoretical and practical analysis indicate that the thoughts and culture conveyed in the source texts should be emphasized when translating culture-loaded writings,rather than sentence-by-sentence translation.
