The source text selected in this report is Katherine Ryan Hyde's short story Say Goodbye for Now.The novel tells a story that a white American doctor and an African-American fell in love with each other,but they could not be together under the background of racial discrimination in the 1950 s.It totally has 32 chapters.Translator chooses chapter 26 to 30 of the novel as the materials of this translation report.Word order refers to the arrangement order of language units at all levels,which is one of the important combination means of language.It reflects certain logic,the language habits formed by people in the long-term use of language and the thinking mode of language users.The nationalities of English-speaking and Chinese-speaking are different nationalities and its thinking modes are necessarily different,so it has different language expression order in describing the same objective fact.It requires that the translator should understand the original text at first,give full play to the subjective initiative on the basis of it,fully consider all factors and choose the best expression way.While translating the style of the source text,translator should not overlook the differences between Chinese and English languages.This practice report mainly discusses the word order adjustment strategy in English-Chinese translation from the perspective of the rearrangement at lexical level and syntactic level.
