Comprehension And Expression Of Military Text In Translation

This report is written based on the translation of the first chapter in The Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific,1941-1942.It is a case study that analyzes the comprehension and expression of military text in translation.The book is written by American history writer and naval military historian Ian W.Toll,who mainly focuses on the war history in the Pacific battlefield of the Second World War.The history of international relations and historical events in this chapter are presented one by one,and the first chapter mainly describes the Japanese aircraft attack on Pearl Harbor with realism seen by the eyes—not only smoke and flame,but also convincing and disturbing scenes of devastation.The first chapter describes Washington’s reactions,highlights the confusion we all know,and these detailed paragraphs will be presented throughout the first chapter.In the process of translating the source text,I adhered to the principle of Readers’ Response,trying to make the TL text more acceptable and understandable.Readers’ Response focuses on the reader(or “audience”)and their experience of a literary work,pays attention to the reader’s role in creating the meaning and experience of a literary work,recognizes the reader as an active agent who imparts “real existence” to the work and completes its meaning through interpretation.At the same time,I also paid much attention to domestication—trying to meet the expectations of the target readers and convey the content of the original text by using expressions that the target language readers are familiar with.Through careful analysis of the translation practice,the report demonstrates the significance of Readers’ Response and Domestication for such kind of text,and provides assistance and reference for military text translation.This translation activity also provides a case that be used as a reference for other translation activities concerning military texts.
