| This report focuses on the translation of Chapter 3 of The Pacific Arts of Polynesia &Micronesia.The source text is an informative historical text,focusing on Polynesian and Micronesia art and artworks.In the process of translating the source text,the translator finds that there are a lot of long sentences in the book,and the translation of long sentences is always a difficult point in processing the source text.By analyzing the characteristics of the source language,the translator takes Skopos theory and its skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule as guidance and divides the long sentences in the source text into long simple sentences,long compound sentences,and long complex sentences.Through case analysis,the characteristics of each type of long sentence and corresponding translation strategies are summarized.Firstly,in long simple sentences,the translation method is selected according to the difference between the source language and the target language in the length and position of the modifier components.Secondly,in long compound sentences,choose appropriate translating methods according to the function of conjunctions.Thirdly,in long complex sentences,choose appropriate translating methods according to the length and function of subordinate clauses.In the translation,the translator finds that a single method is not suitable for long-sentence translation,because long sentences are characterized by a number of characters and complex structures.Only by combining various methods,such as syntactic linearity,splitting off,word-order adjustment,semantic flexibility,and voice conversion can it help long-sentence translation.Under the guidance of translation strategies and the three rules of Skopos theory,the long sentences in the target text can achieve the core purpose of informative text to convey the information of the source text.The translated text conforms to the characteristics of the target language and enhances the reading experience of the target language readers. |
