On C-E Translation Of The 2017 Report On Government Work From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

With the deepening of China's reform and opening-up as well as China's rising status in global arena,China is taking an increasingly active role in global affairs.As a result,Report on Government work(hereinafter referred to as "the Report"),has drawn worldwide attention.The Report is the most authoritative source of information about the Chinese government for the international community,therefore,the quality of the English version of the Report has a great effect on China' s image and the study of the English version of the Report is very important.The thesis makes a comparative study of the Chinese and English version of the Report on the basis of Skopos Theory with an aim to explore the application of the strategies and methods of translation in the translation of political texts.This thesis consists of seven chapters.Chapter one presents the research background,purpose and significance of the study.Chapter two mainly reviews previous researches on Skopos Theory and the translation of the Report.Chapter three outlines the development of the theory from its first appearance to its completion,as well as its three rules.Chapter four,five and six are the main parts of the paper,discussing the English version of the report,on the basis of the Skopos Theory respectively.Chapter four mainly deals with the translation of the acceptability of culture and the language based on the Skopos Rule.Chapter five makes an analysis of the syntactical and textual translation of the Report based on Coherence Rule.Chapter six uses the Fidelity Rule to analyze the translation of rhetorical language and lexis of the Report.Chapter seven is the conclusion of the thesis,in which findings are summarized,the limitations of the paper are revealed,some advice about the researches and strategies of translation are also put forward.The author believes that the Skopos Theory is feasible and practical to translation activities.It provides some translation strategies,methods and comprehensive prospective for the translation of the Report as well as other similar political texts,and it can help improve the quality of the English version of the Report.
