This is a report on the E-C newspaper translation of economic news in Shanghai Evening Post and Mercury. It was a famous English newspaper founded by American nationals in Shanghai in the 1940 s,which regarded American nationals as essential target-reader group. It covered a wide range of subjects, including politics, economy, culture and education etc..Guided by the communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark and target reader-oriented principle, the author deeply analyzed relevant problems encountered in translation, aiming at summarizing some feasible translation strategies and methods.Besides, the author hopes that it can provide reference and suggestions for the translation studies of modern English newspapers to some extent. The report has four parts. The first part is about task description, which introduces the source of the task, historic development of Shanghai Evening Post and Mercury, the purpose and significance of the newspaper as well. The second part mainly presents preparations for translation, the implementation of translation plan and post-translation process. The preparations include the application of ABBYY FineReader, the preparation for background knowledge and the choice of communicative translation theory. The third part is about case analysis of translation, which mainly elaborates on the problems encountered in the translation, including lack of attraction in news headline, inaccuracy of information sources, loss of aesthetic value, ideological discrepancies. The author found that amplification and free translation could be applied to increase the accuracy and vividness of news headline. The application of various retrieval techniques is feasible to get more accurate information in a short time. The four-character idioms could be adopted to meet the reader's aesthetic expectations.Abridgement and adaptation are proper methods to adapt the ideology and political stance of target readers. The fourth part is a conclusion, including limitation and suggestions for further study.
