Research On Reality Show's Fansubbing In Light Of Queer Theory

Fansub culture has constantly been taking on new appearance in the cultural melting pot.Fansub groups' unique ways of expression and aesthetic orientation has opened up a new research space for Translation Studies.The translated subtitles of RuPaul's Drag Race are such a typical case—Bold deviation from the original discourse,vulgar expletives,sex-related expressions,strange online catchwords and all kinds of language variants can be found in them,revealing a strong sense of queerness.In order to discover the essence and cause of this translation phenomenon,the author examines and analyzes the subtitles from a perspective of Queer Theory and Horizon Fusion.The author choses the subtitles of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 11 translated by Xiao Mada Fansub Group as the study object.From the Queer Theory perspective,the author observes and analyzes the speech act of the drag queens in the reality show,then further analyzes the translated subtitles.It is found that although the content and form are largely different from that of the original discourse,the translated subtitles share the similar linguistic feature with the original discourse overall--They are both hybrid,varied and unstable.The sub group's unique ways of using linguistic variants,verbal signs and gender expressions in the subtitles are actually deeply influenced by the domestic queer culture and conform to the universal rules of queer community's gender construction.This translation phenomenon represents the horizon fusion between the sub group and the drag queens,it is the result of the sub group's understanding on the source context with its own pre-understanding.The translation practice of Xiao Mada Sub Group is not only a reflection of the construction process of drag queens' gender identities,but also an epitome of the domestic queer community's speech act and unique gender ideology.
