Reality shows from abroad have gained a growing popularity in China, which has led to a need for subtitle translation from English into Chinese of such video programs as part of the effort made by fansub groups to introduce more these reality shows to a larger Chinese audience. However, translators can hardly find any research in reality show subtitle translation, not to mention the one featuring makeup and beauty competition. This thesis discusses some typical challenges a translator may be faced with and proposes tentative strategies for such subtitle translation tasks. It begins with an introduction to the English-Chinese translation project “Glam Master”,which was completed by the author, before moving on to an analysis of three commonly seen challenges in subtitle translation for such programs: time-space constraints, lack of glossary and style requirements.Based on this analysis, the author proposes three tentative strategies: omission of redundant words and adjustment of word order;building a glossary;and creating a style guide. |
