Consecutive Interpreting In Light Of Gile’s Effort Model

This report is based on two speeches in TED Conference.One is New Thinking on the Climate Crisis,the other is Al Gore Warns on Latest Climate Trends.The speaker of these two speeches is Al Gore,the former vice president of the United States.Now he is an advocate of the protection of environment and ecosystem.The author made a simulation interpreting of Gore’s two speeches and finished this report based on the analysis of his own interpreting process.The whole interpreting process is divided into three phases.Pre-interpretation preparation is the beginning stage,in which parallel texts,technical terms,backdrop of the speeches were prepared.The second phase is the interpreting process.In this phase,the author asked his roommate to charge the pauses of source language videos.When the video was paused,the author(i.e.,the interpreter)started to interpret.The interpreting process includes the following short-term memory,note-taking,language production,etc.The voice of source videos as well as the voice of the interpreter’s was recorded in computer.The last procedure is based on the transcription of the recorded materials and the analysis of the transcribed text.The author compared and analyzed the source text and the interpreted text to find the techniques that were adopted in the interpreting process and the problems in the interpreting process.This report chiefly discussed the problems and the techniques in the interpretation from the perspective of Gile’s Effort Model.The problems that the author met are mostly at the word and sentence level and are mainly caused by the wrong allocation of brain resources.The techniques that were adopted in the interpreting process are as follows: omission,repetition,addition,and making full use of pictures.They are used to achieve an exact and faithful reproduction of the original speeches and save brain resources during the interpreting process.Finally,the author discussed the ways to improve the ability of interpretation in the light of Effort Model.The author has attained precious experience by accomplishing the task of interpretation and he hopes this experience can enlarge his knowledge about interpretation and improve his interpreting competence.In addition,the author hopes this report can provide some helpful experience to other interpreters.
