A Studyon Disfluencyofnumber Interpretinginc-e Consecutive Interpretation In Lightof Gile’s Effort Model

Economy and trade conference is one of the most common conference types in consecutive interpreting where the interpretation of numbers will be inevitable.With characteristics like unpredictability,large amount of information and low redundancy,numbers pose great challenges to interpreters.Before this,few studies are carried out on the study of the effect of number interpretation on interpretation fluency,most of which focus on the effect of number interpretation on interpretation accuracy.The majority of the researches on number interpretation focuses on number interpretation skills and ignores the influence of number interpretation on interpretation fluency.Against this background and in the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model,this thesis conducts an experiment to find out the influence of numbers’ interpretation on interpretation fluency.The author invites ten postgraduate students with the major of English interpretation from Dalian University of Technology to participate in the experiment,which consists in two paragraphs and both the two are the excerpts from a speech made by Ambassador Liu Xiaoming at the Global Markets Conference 2019.Through experiments,questionnaire and interview,this thesis aims to find out answers for the following questions: 1)In consecutive interpretation,do paragraphs with more numbers cause more disfluencies than paragraphs with fewer numbers? 2)What are the factors behind if paragraphs with more numbers cause more disfluencies? 3)How do students interpreters cope with disfluencies efficiently?Through this experiment,the conclusion that numbers have negative impacts on interpretation fluency can be made.Specifically,paragraphs with mire numbers could result in: 1)more disfluencies;2)slower speech rate;3)longer silent pauses.The reasons are as follows: 1)the pressure of number interpretation;2)ineffective notes;3)unskilled number conversion;4)lack of interpreting practice.In order to solve the problem,this thesis proposes three strategies and one tactic: 1)to increase number interpretation exercises at paragraph level;2)to write effective notes;3)to enhance linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge.One tactic is approximation,which is used in number interpretation and note writing.
