Report On The Translation Of Language Contact And The Future Of English(Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

This report is accomplished on the practical basis of translating some chapters.These chapters are chosen from the academic works Language Contact and the Future of English written by Ian Mackenzie,which has no translation in China.The theoretical basis of this report is the principle of the Skopos theory,which is the foundation theory of functionalist in the translation field.Katharina Reiss proposed the rudiment of the Skopos theory thought,while his student Vermeer founded the Skopos theory.The core concept of this theory is the objective of translation action.The Skopos theory means that translators start from the intended functions of translation during the process and select the best processing mode in accordance with various contextual factors.In this report,the author discussed problems in the translation process and solved them under the instruction of translation theories and skills.The author analyzed these aspects from vocabularies,sentences,and texts.Three principles include the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Translation skills contain addition,conversion and concretization at lexical level;division and inversion at sentence level;repetition and interpretation at textual level.The author has gotten valuable experience as translating academic papers,hoping to provide some reference and experience in this translation practice for translators who translate the same type of texts.
