In recent years, there is an increasing frequency to hold international academic seminars. And the translation quality of academic seminar papers determines whether a seminar succeeds or not.The international academic seminar “In what sense can social science be science” was sponsored by UESTC on May12-13,2018.This report, concerning three English academic seminar papers from this seminar, explores the methods that are appropriate for the translation of academic seminar papers under the guidance of Skopos Theory.According to the requirements of the seminar organizers, the translation purpose is to offer Chinese experts a precise and concise target text so as to facilitate the communication between domestic and overseas scholars. The end justifies the means. All the translation methods are adopted to realize the translation purpose.According to Skopos Theory, there is a hierarchy among its three rules.Fidelity Rule is subordinate to Coherence Rule, and both of them are subordinate to Skopos Rule.Priority should always be given to Skopos.Bearing this idea in mind, the translator adopts six translation methods for the translation of academic seminar papers, based on the three characteristics of the source text, which are accuracy, logicality and scientificity.Firstly,in the light of Skopos Rule, and considering the logicality of the source text, the translator adopts amplification and combination to achieve the translation purpose. The translator also discusses the situations where conflicts exist between Skopos Rule and the other two rules.Secondly,in the light of Coherence Rule, and considering the accuracy and logicality of the source text, the translator adopts reconstruction and conversion. In this way,the translation purpose can be realized.Meanwhile, the target text can also meet the intratextual coherence.Thirdly,in the light of Fidelity Rule, considering the scientificity of the source text, the translator adopts literal translation and free translation to be faithful to the source text to the greatest extent on the premise of guaranteeing the translation purpose. These six methods may serve as references for the translation of other academic seminar papers.
