Abstract is the eye of the academic paper. It facilitates readers to know about the main content quickly and simplify the process of documentation retrieval. As academic communication becomes more frequent, a large number of academic papers have come into being. In order to make English readers accessible to research content, Chinese academic papers are required to be equipped with English abstracts. However, due to the uneven English proficiency of researchers, the quality of English abstracts is unsatisfactory. In recent years, most scholars studied abstract writing and translation from the perspective of linguistics, but few ones studied C-E translation of abstract from the aspect of translation. This thesis aims to explore the problems in translated abstracts of medical papers by applying the Skopos theory as the theoretical foundation. According to Skopos theory and its three principles, the translators have to consider the readers’ acceptability and the accuracy of the information instead of pursuing words equivalence. This thesis adopts the method of case study. Based on these translation principles, it analyzes examples from Lancetand Chinese Journal of Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery. This thesis consists of four parts. Part one introduces the background. Part two introduces the Skopos theory and the literature review of previous studies. Part three analyzes examples from Lancet and Chinese Journal of Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery under the translation principles and summarized the main reasons for the problems and part four is the conclusion.Through analysis and discussion, purposes of principle for medical abstract translation involve standardization, acceptability and accuracy.
