This is a translation project report on the English-Chinese translation of an extracted chapters(prolog:The Contemporary Portrait,chapter 1:Salem Is My Dwelling Place:A Life of Nathaniel Hawthorne,and chapter 2:The Hathornes and The Mannings)from Salem Is My Dwelling Place:A Life o.f Nathaniel Hawthorn,published in 1991,written by Miller Edwin Haviland,an American male biographer.The selected contents present the situation of Salem and Hawthorne’s complicated feelings towards the town.They also present that Hawthorn’s character is deeply influenced by the loss of father at an early age.Nathaniel Hawthorne(1804-1864)was the most famous American romantic novelist in the 19th century,whose works were well-known in American literature world.Therefore,this book,which is a biography of Hawthorne’s^life,is selected as the translation material.Difficulties in this material lie in the translation of vocabularnes and sentences.Firstly,the book was finished in 19th century,and many words are not familiar with neoteric.Secondly,It’s also a difficult task to translate long sentences.Therefore,getting rid of the original sentence structure should also be taken into consideration.To produce a high-quality translation,the translator follows Skopos Theory and Hans vermeer’s principles of purpose,coherence and fidelity.For lexical translation,free translation,word conversion and amplification are adopted in the translation.For sentences translation,disassembly and reorganization are used in reintegrating the sentences.In addition,a large number of rhetorical devices and poems are retained to produce the equivalent style in translation.The translator gained a lot from this translation project and realized that a qualified translator should not only have excellent bilingual abilities,but also have to take a correct attitude towards translation and listen to other’s opinions. |
