As the carrier of information transfer and business negotiation,the English business contract plays a pivotal role which cannot be neglected.The quality of the E-C translation of business contract has extensive influence.Moreover,in a large number of business contracts,the proportion of loan contracts is increasing day by day.Therefore,the study of loan contract translation is of great significance.As one of the key theories of systemic functional linguistics,the register theory is widely applied in translation.Through the analysis of three variables of the register,the register features of the original text are successfully reproduced.By taking the translation of two loan contracts as examples,this report discusses the translation of the English loan contract under M.A.K.Halliday's register theory.In this report,the author firstly analyzes the linguistic and stylistic features of the source texts.The source texts have strict grammatical structures;legal terms and contractual terminologies are abundant in texts;passive voice,long and complex sentences,sentences with modal structure and attribute clauses are frequently used in texts;and discourse of the source texts are characterized with precise logicality and high formality.In the process of translation,based on Halliday's register theory,the translator discusses the translation from the perspective of the field,tenor and mode equivalence,and adopts the translation techniques including word conversion,amplification,combination,shift and division in translation.In short,the above concepts are of great significance to the English loan contract translation in order to express the conceptual,interpersonal and textual meaning of the register,and to ensure the accuracy and normalization of translated texts.This report illustrates that the register theory is applicable in the E-C translation ofloan contract.In order to improve the quality of contract translation,the translator should try to achieve the equivalence of register so as to express the register features of source text as much as possible.It is hoped that the analysis of this report might provide some references for future study on loan contract translation.
