By making a case study of the version of Loan Contract of Texas State EnergyConservation Office, the author of this thesis conducts a research on translation ofloan contracts. First, the author introduces the background of the translated projectbefore she reviews the major researches on translation of loan contracts and mentionsthe significance of this study. In addition, the author analyzes the source language textin detail and discusses and proves the principles of “being legal” and “being loyal” fortranslation of. loan contracts. Next, the author presents the process of translation ofthe project, which is divided into three stages: comprehension of the source text,reproduction of the source text in the target text, and proofreading the version. Theauthor lays emphasis on the case analysis. She explores and illustrates methods andtechniques for translation of the loan contract at the levels of wording, syntax, andtext. At the level of wording, the author discusses the translation of archaic words,terms of different meanings, modal verbs and doublets; at the level of syntax, sheexplores the translation of complex sentences and passive sentences; at the level oftext, she emphasizes consistency and coherence of the target text. Finally, the authorsummarizes the key points and the major findings, points out the shortcomings andfurther aspects to be researched into in the future.This study is intended to help translators get familiar with language features ofloan contracts and especially enhance their skill for translation of such texts.
