The development of water conservancy and hydropower is closely related to the national economy and people's livelihood as well as the development of national strategies,which is why different nations in the world are sparing no effort to develop water conservancy and hydropower undertakings.The major of water conservancy and hydropower includes water resources,hydrology,mechanics,environment and other disciplines,thus possessing an intrinsic interdisciplinary nature.With the continuous advancement of water conservancy and hydropower technology,the exchanges in the field of water conservancy and hydropower have become increasingly frequent both at home and abroad,and the translation of English for science and technology texts in terms of water conservancy and hydropower has also received unprecedented attention.Put forward by Eugene A.Nida in the last century,the theory of functional equivalence aims to reproduce the original information with the closest natural equivalent so that the target readers can adequately understand the information conveyed by the original texts.Since the purpose of scientific and techological texts such as water conservancy and hydropower is to convey objective and accurate information to the readers,these texts conform to the characteristics of transmitting information postulated by Nida's functional equivalence theory,so that the theory can be used to guide the translation practice of scientific and technological texts such as water conservancy and hydropower to reach the lexical equivalence,the syntactic equivalence and the textual equivalenceBased on the functional equivalence theory,the present translation report uses three articles in Water Resources:An Integrated Approach,an English work on water resources and hydropower as the research object,and analyzes and studies the translation process of such texts by way of exemplification.The report is mainly composed of the following aspects:first,the requirements,meaning and translation preparation process of the translation task;second,the functional equivalence theory and its application in the scientific and technical texts of water conservancy and hydropower;third,the specific analyses of the original texts and the target texts from three aspects of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,and to find out the problems in translation and put forward corresponding solutions to reach the lexical equivalence,the syntactic equivalence and the textual equivalenceIt is indicated in the report that the functional equivalence theory is applicable to science and technology translation in two ways:on the one hand,it can help the target readers understand the characteristics of water conservancy and hydropower texts;on the other hand,it can provide some references for the translation strategies adopted in this field of Chinese translation.The report also asserts that,in the whole translation process,the translator needs to analyze the original texts at the levels of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,and then find the most appropriate equivalent and reflect the information expressed in the original texts,so as to enhance the quality of the translated version.
