The thesis is composed of the source text of Chapter Three of Spatializing Culture: The Ethnography of Space and Place, its Chinese version and a report on the translation. The source text demonstrates the value of ethnographic theory and methods for understanding space and place. It considers how ethnographically based spatial analyses can yield insight in prejudices, inequalities, and social exclusion as well as offering people the means for understanding the places where they live, work, shop, and socialize. It is translated for the purposes of drawing more attention of domestic scholars' to spatializing culture and of providing more reference materials for them. The translation report first introduces the source of the original text and why it is chosen to be translated. Then the analysis of its language features is given and the Communicative Translation Theory is briefly introduced.Examples are cited to illustrate how the Chinese version is completed under the guidance of that theory. To be specific, the examples involve such aspects as meaning choice of terms and proper nouns, meaning extension of common words, translation of attributive clauses and repetition of key words or substitutive expressions. Finally, reflections on the translation practice are summed up.
