Since the 1970 s,scholars at home and abroad have conducted a large number of researches on vocabulary learning strategies.Although some of them involve English vocabulary learning strategies used by minority students,few researches have been conducted on English vocabulary learning strategies used by senior high school students of Miao minority.Therefore,the author tries to make a survey on English vocabulary learning strategies of senior high school students of Miao minority,which can be beneficial for these students to improve their English vocabulary learning.Qiandongnan National High School is located in ethnic minority autonomous prefecture of Guizhou Province,where students are of various ethnic groups,especially Miao minority.Before the research begins,the author makes a field survey here,knowing that most of Miao students in the school have many problems in English vocabulary learning.Therefore,they are chosen as research subjects.Based on the classifications of vocabulary learning strategies,the author designs the questionnaire on English vocabulary learning strategies and makes the interview outline for Miao students and teachers.And then,225 Miao students fill in the questionnaire;English teachers and students who can speak Miao language are interviewed.After obtaining the consent of the subjects,the author records the interview process.The data are obtained by calculating the proportion of the number of people in each option of each question with Excel,and the recorded content of interview is transcribed into text form.The research conclusions are concluded through analyzing the data and the interview content.The research conclusions are as follows: firstly,the problems exist in the concepts of English vocabulary learning and the frequency of applying English vocabulary learning strategies.Most of Miaohigh school students have realized the importance of English vocabulary learning strategies and attempt to apply diversified strategies,including mother language strategy,self-management strategy,self-evaluation strategy,context strategy,dictionary-consulting strategy,association strategy,guessing strategy and mechanical memory strategy.However,they mainly apply mechanical memory strategy,and the overall application level of social affective strategies is not high.Secondly,the reasons lie in the fact that Miao high school students are influenced by Miao language in the process of learning English vocabulary.Meanwhile,with the late exposure to English,psychological effect and pronunciation,they have poor English foundation,insufficient vocabulary and passive learning.Through the investigation and research,the author hopes that local English teachers can be good at discovering the problems encountered by Miao students in their English learning,encourage them to actively use English vocabulary learning strategies,improve their recognition of the importance of English vocabulary learning strategies,guide them to grasp their learning characteristics and develop the ability of self-monitoring and planning.
