A Study Of Interpretation Of Expressions With Chinese Characteristics From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the continuous deepening of reform and opening up,China’s foreign exchanges have become increasingly frequent.China’s influence on various aspects of international politics and economy has also increased,and China has taken on more international responsibilities.Therefore,countries in the world are eager to know more about China’s current situation and development plans.During the two sessions of NPC and CPPCC each year,Since 2013 China’s foreign minister Wang Yi answers questions from Chinese and foreign journalists on China’s foreign policy and external relations.Given China’s special national conditions and long history and culture,there exist a lot of expressions with Chinese characteristics in Wang Yi’s speeches.The accurate interpretations of these expressions with Chinese characteristics play an important role in strengthening China’s external publicity and enhancing China’s cultural soft strength.The interpretation is of great importance in building a bridge for communications between the two sides.In this thesis,the author chooses the interpreting data of Wang Yi’s press conferences from the year 2015 to2018 for research and analysis.First,the author makes a detailed introduction to the definition and features of expressions with Chinese characteristics,and divides the expressions with Chinese characteristics that appeared in the interpreting data into three categories: political expressions with Chinese Characteristics,idioms with Chinese Characteristics,and idiomatic expressions with Chinese characteristics.Skopos Theory,as an adaptable and expository theory,especially emphasizes that the interpreter chooses the best approach based on the expected function of the target text and various contextual factors in the process of interpretation.Based on Skopos Theory,the author mainly analyzes the following two aspects: first,the application of the three rules of SkoposTheory(the Skopos Rule,the Coherence Rule and the Fidelity Rule)in the interpretation of expressions with Chinese characteristics;second,translation strategies and methods for interpreting expressions with Chinese characteristics.The thesis demonstrates the explanatory power and guiding ability of three rules of Skopos Theory in the interpretation of expressions with Chinese characteristics.By analyzing the application of Skopos Theory in the interpretation of the expressions with Chinese characteristics in Wang Yi’s speeches in the press conferences from the year 2015 to 2018,the author summarizes some suggestions,hoping to provide something useful for the interpreters’ practice in such field.
