The Translation Of York,the First 2000 Years From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This translation practice report is based on York,the first 2000 years,written by Richard Aitken and Mike Barber.In light and witty tone,the book tells about important characters and events in the first 2000 years of York’s history,with a total of 30 historical stories.This book not only truly restores history,but also tells history in the form of short stories,which also improves people’s interest in reading history.After careful study of the source text,the translator realized that it is essential to clarify the purpose of translation and try to restore the source information as vividly as possible.It is not enough to just translate the basic meaning of the source text to the targeted audience.More importantly,how to smoothly reproduce the richly-embedded cultural background information was more challenging in this project.Therefore,in the process of translation,under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator analyzed the important and difficult points from the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.In view of the characteristics of the text,the translator should not only be faithful to the source text,but also make the translation clear and coherent,and also translate the cultural background information so that readers can have a better reading experience.This practice report studies and analyzes cultural background knowledge and translation in the source text based on the three rules of Skopos theory.It is hoped that the translation of this practice report may arouse more people’s interest in reading about the fascinating history of York,and at the same time,offer some feasible enlightenment for the translation of related works.This translation practice has benefited the translator a lot,but there are still many shortcomings.Because of the inexperience of the translator,in some places,although the translator can understand the author’s intention,it is difficult to give attention to both elegance and faithfulness to the source text.Therefore,in the future,the translator is determined to be more devoted in work and study,so as to improve her overall professional competence.
