A Practice Report On Consecutive Interpreting For The Meeting On Energy Conservation Policy And Garbage Classification Held In Chester, UK

With the aggravation of global environmental problems,environmental protection has become the focal point of all over the world,among which,China attaches great importance to this issue and has been committed to the idea of green development and has made tremendous efforts for environmental protection.Therefore,in this context,on the14~thh of November,six staff members from the People's Government of Pudong District of Shanghai in China,arrived in the city of Chester that is situated in the northwestern England looking forward to getting some experience about waste classification and energy conservation and participated in the relevant meeting.The meeting was presided over and delivered by Mr.Ebo,who was an ex-lord mayor of Chester and currently a local government and business consultant.This report is an in-depth study of the interpretation based on the interpreting conducted at this meeting by the author,the purpose of which is to make a thorough analysis of the merits and demerits as well as the coping interpreting strategies during the interpreting practice,with a view to being a lesson for the future interpreting.In this report,the author briefly introduces the task description including the background,objectives,and characteristics of the task and also mentions how a calm state of mind influence the interpreter's performance in one interpreting practice.In addition,the author makes the description of the interpreting process which is comprised of advance preparation which contains the background knowledge,glossary preparation,acquaintance with the pronunciation of the speaker and physical and mental preparation.After that,the author describes how the interpreting process goes and what performance evaluation is given.Besides,this report further elaborates on case analysis,pointing out some deficiencies in the consecutive interpreting process,which contain misinterpretation,missing information,disfluency,and their respective reasons.Apart from that,the report analyzes the performance of the interpreter and highlights the coping strategies employed in interpreting practice,which include generalization,segmentation,as well as amplification.In the last part,the author summarizes what was learned through reflecting on the interpreting practice and puts forward some suggestions for improvement,which hopefully pave the way for the future interpreting practice and give some enlightenment to other peers.The significance of this report is that the detailed analysis of the interpreting practice lays a solid foundation for the author,providing the author with specific and instructive directions,which is of great guiding significance for the future interpretation practice.
