As the biggest developing country in the world,China is facing serious environmental issues in its industrial process, which has resulted in enormous losses and has posed a threat to public health. In addition to improving people's awareness of environmental protection,it is also necessary to learn advanced technologies and experience from some developed countries.Translation of environmental engineering texts has become more and more important in such a background.Environmental Engineering(EE)is a branch of environmental science. It mainly studies how to protect and to rationally use natural resources,to use scientific methods to solve increasingly serious environmental problems,to improve environmental quality, and to promote environmental protection and social development.EE is to study and to engage in prevention and control of environmental pollution and to improve the quality of science and technology.EE texts are characterized with professional terminologies, complex sentences, logical texts, tables, figures, equations, and so on.This report is based on the translation of Environmental Engineering—Principles and practice, guided by Tytler's “Three Principles of Translation”,combined with a series of translation techniques on lexical level and syntactical level such as literal translation, free translation, and sentence pattern conversion, amplification, omission and so on.Besides, the translator adopts reader-oriented principle to finish the whole translation in textual level. The report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the project background, significance and the outline of this report;the second chapter expounds features of EEE(Environmental Engineering English),research of EE translation, and Tytler's “Three Principles of Translation”;the third chapter describes the source text and translation procedure;the fourth chapter discusses translation techniques with corresponding cases from lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. The last chapter includes findings, implications and shares deficiencies and suggestions.
